Valentine's Day

I can’t quite tell if it is ironic or if it makes perfect sense to be International Flower Workers Day on the same day as Valentine’s Day. The irony is that although for most of us it is a day to express love, for those working in the greenhouses in Colombia it is the busiest period, leaving little time to spend with loved ones. A worker from the Bogota Savannah, just aged 15, sums up this contrast saying ‘In your country, flowers are a symbol of love. Here they are a symbol of suffering’ (Krug, 1998: 651). This juxtaposition between production and consumption really stuck out for me when creating our web based activism. Using the comments of workers as reviews on a spoof Morrison’s website grounded the theory that ‘behind the beautiful bouquets lie worrying reports of poor pay, long hours and other systemic labour abuses’ (Balch, 2015).
